Derek Shepherd es un personaje ficticio de la serie de televisión Anatomía de Grey, de la cadena ABC, interpretado por Patrick Dempsey.

Derek Shepherd es un neurocirujano que se muda a Seattle en busca de un nuevo comienzo. En un principio, no se sabe mucho de su vida, pero es persistente y tiene una arrogancia que lo hace encantador. Es un médico con mucho talentoso y admirado por el resto de la plantilla del hospital, especialmente la femenina.


El Principio [editar]Derek Shepherd nació y creció en una familia de clase media de Nueva York y es el único hijo varón de cinco hermanos. Su padre falleció cuando Derek todavía era muy joven, pero a pesar de ello consiguió licenciarse en medicina sin los ingresos paternos, al igual que sus hermanas Nancy, que es especialista en obstetricia y ginecología, y Kathleen, que es psiquiatra. Por otro lado el mejor amigo de la infancia de Derek era Mark Sloan, un chico que procedía de una familia adinerada pero poco afectiva por él, así que se sintió como un segundo hijo en la familia Sheperd.

Derek se casó en el año 1994 con su novia de la Facultad de Medicina, Addison Montgomery, y los dos empezaron sus años como internos, estudiando bajo la tutela del Dr. Richard Webber. Después de terminar esta etapa, tanto Derek como Addison, lograron éxito rápidamente en sus respectivos campos. Llevaban un estilo de vida próspero y esto se veía reflejado tanto en su casa de Manhattan, que daba a Central Park, como en su residencia en la exclusiva localidad de Los Hamptons, además también poseían sus propias consultas privadas. Sin embargo, su éxito y trabajo, que los mantenían constantemente ocupados, pusieron baches en su matrimonio, lo que los alejó; la distancia emocional condujo que Addison engañase a Derek con su mejor amigo Mark.

Después de descubrir, en su propia cama, a Addison con Mark, Derek dio por terminado su matrimonio y se trasladó a Seattle, aceptando una oferta de empleo de su ex profesor, Richard Webber, como cabeza del Departamento de neurocirugía en el prestigioso hospital Seattle Grace y por ello cambió su hermosa casa de Manhattan por una sencilla caravana ubicada en una propiedad que compra al llegar a la ciudad, cuarenta acres en la Isla Bainbridge.

Ya en su nuevo trabajo Derek es un cirujano muy respetado entre sus colegas del Seattle Grace, sus servicios suponen dos millones de dólares en ingresos para el hospital. Ha llevado a cabo procedimientos complicados y peligrosos, incluyendo una intervención quirúrgica de paralización, dos bypasses de cerebro y una operación de separación para gemelos unidos adultos. Y pese a ser un cirujano competente y experimentado no ha olvidado la importancia de la compasión y el buen trato a sus pacientes.

Derek arrives at Seattle Grace hospital as the new head of neurosurgery. He is a Bowdoin College graduate. Shortly after arriving, he has a one-night stand with Meredith Grey, only to discover that she is a new surgical intern at the hospital where he has recently begun working. Although she initially rejects his advances, Meredith eventually agrees to date Derek. His personality and good looks earn him the nickname “McDreamy” among Meredith and her friends. Their relationship comes to a sudden halt, however, when Derek’s estranged wife Addison Montgomery arrives in Seattle unannounced, making it clear that she wants to give their marriage another try.

Although Derek struggles over the decision, he breaks up with Meredith, and returns to Addison. Their attempts to repair their marriage are strained when Derek confesses he had fallen in love with Meredith, becoming jealous when she begins dating again. They sleep together at a hospital prom, with Derek confessing his love to Meredith the next day. Derek initially feels guilty for hurting Addison, but is angry when she seeks solace with his former best friend Mark Sloan, with whom she had previously had an affair. Addison ultimately leaves Seattle to work in a private hospital in Los Angeles. Derek's relationship with Mark remains tense for some months after Mark transfers to work at Seattle Grace, but the two eventually repair their friendship.

Meredith dates both Derek and her new beau Finn Dandridge for a brief period, eventually choosing to be with Derek. After a ferry boat accident, Derek saves Meredith from drowning. Meredith becomes increasingly depressed after the event, causing a growing disconnect between them. They break up, but continue to have sex. Meredith becomes jealous when Derek goes on a date with another woman, and they reconcile only to break up again when Derek wants to take their relationship faster than Meredith is comfortable with. He begins dating Rose, his scrub nurse. Several weeks later, he and Meredith begin working on a clinical trial together, realizing they still have feelings for each other. When their final trial patient becomes their first success, they reconcile again, and Derek breaks up with Rose.

At the start of Season Five, Meredith and Derek begin to talk about the possibility of moving in together. Meredith agrees, but becomes angry when he wants her to move her roommates out. Eventually, Derek agrees to move in along with her friends. After Derek breaks up with Rose for Meredith, Rose gets angry because Derek told her all the time that he was over Meredith. She even goes so far as to jokingly tell him that she was pregnant with his child and she recently stabbed him with a scalpel in the OR. She realizes that because of Derek she is no longer the nurse that every doctor wants in their OR anymore and leaves for a new position, which leaves Meredith and Derek to go about their relationship. He and Meredith then move in together. Later in the episode "Wish You Were Here", when he has to treat a serial killer, it is revealed that Derek's father was shot to death.

In a recent promo it is seen and heard that Derek is planning to propose to Meredith
